Fingerprint Records Lead to 47,000 Being Deported

The Homeland Security Department examined records of 3 million inmates at local jails, leading to the removal or deportation of about 47,000 immigrants over 18 months. The efforts were part of a fingerprint-sharing program known as Secure Communities, which the government claims is aimed at getting rid of the “worst of the worst” criminal immigrants from the U.S. As of Aug. 3, 494 counties and local and state agencies in 27 states were sharing fingerprints from jail bookings through the program.


An immigration advocacy group claims that about one-quarter of the immigrants kicked out of the country did not have criminal records. Advocacy groups complain that the government should be spending more time pursuing those with a more serious criminal background. Immigration and Customs Enforcement divides crimes into three categories, with Level 1 being the most serious. A monthly report of Secure Communities statistics show most of those deported committed Level 2 or 3 crimes or were non-criminals,
