Nebraska City Law on Hiring or Renting to Illegal Immigrants Challenged

The voters in Fremont, Nebraska recently approved an ordinance to ban hiring or renting property to illegal immigrants. The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund filed a lawsuit in federal court “to protect immigrants from unlawful, local regulation of immigration.” The group claims that the law infringes on constitutional and federal authority. The American Civil Liberties Union has joined their efforts to block enforcement of the law.

Proponents of the law say it is necessary due to lax enforcement of immigration laws by federal officials. Opponents claim the law would promote discrimination. Due to the legal expenses involved with defending the law, Fremont officals are considering suspending the law, which was scheculed to take effect on July 29. Fremont city officials are scheduled to appear in court to address the temporary restraining order request filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund.
