UN Group Says Arizona Immigration Law May Violate International Guidelines

United Nation (UN) human rights experts stated that Arizona’s new law on illegal immigration could violate international standards that are binding on the United States. The six UN experts stated that ”A disturbing pattern of legislative activity hostile to ethnic minorities and immigrants has been established with the adoption of an immigration law that may allow for police action targeting individuals on the basis of their perceived ethnic origin”.
Arizona’s immigration law makes it a crime to be an undocumented immigrant and requires police to question anyone whose immigration status appears suspect. Lawsuits challenging the law have already been filed, and other civil rights organizations have also threatened to file lawsuits. Opponents of the law claim that it violates the U.S. Constitution’s provisions against unreasonable search and seizure and will result in racial profiling of Hispanics. Proponents of the law claim it will pressure illegal immigrants to voluntarily leave the country.
