Pennsylvania Student Sues School District for Webcam Spying

High school student Robbins has sued Lower Merion School District for secretly installing tracking software on laptops issued to students. The software captured over 56,000 images and screenshots, which were recovered from the district’s servers by forensic experts. Although the images were likely captured in students’ homes, none of the images captured appear to be salacious.
The school district claims to have activated the tracking software to help recover 80 missing laptops. Robbins asserts that he had not reported the laptop missing or stolen and is questioning why he was photographed by thre district over 400 times in a 15-day period, sometimes asleep or half-dressed. The FBI has begun an investigation into possible wiretap statute violations and U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania has introduced legislation to include webcam surveillance in federal wiretap law
